Today, you get to see what I made the pillow form for! I love that this project mixed sewing and crochet.\n\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\nI have been eyeing knitted blankets lately. The idea of having a big sweater-like throw for the winter seems so nice and cozy. I've seen some great ones at T.J. Maxx and Home Goods for about $30-$40, but couldn't bring myself to buy one. Part my thinking was I could make my own. However, I don't know how to knit and crochet just wouldn't be the same. Plus, yarn for a blanket could easily run nearly as much (or more!) money and hours of my time. So I have yet to get myself a cozy knit blanket until I feel like spending the money or learning to knit.\n\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\nIn the meantime, I still wanted to bring a bit of yarn work into my decor this fall. I found this pattern for the \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.ravelry.com\/patterns\/library\/lodge-pillow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003ELodge Pillow\u003C\/a\u003E in the \u003Ci\u003EOne-Skein Wonders\u003C\/i\u003E book that I've been quite addicted to lately. This crochet pillow the perfect solution for now. You can see my review of the pattern on \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.ravelry.com\/projects\/shesgotthenotion\/lodge-pillow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003ERavelry\u003C\/a\u003E. I used Lion Brand Heartland in Grand Canyon for it. It was an impulse buy because I just loved the color. It was my first time working with Heartland yarn and I liked using it so much that I've already bought two more skeins for future projects.\n\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Ca name='more'\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\nThe one alteration of the pattern I did was the finishing. I wanted the cover to be removable, and toyed with the idea of a zipper. Then I realized, I wouldn't be washing it very often because it's mostly a decorative pillow. I might take it off and put in back on only once or twice a year. So I decided instead of sewing the fourth side closed, to slip stitch it closed instead and leaving a long tail. I simply slipped the long tail inside the pillow. It can be fished out when needed, and the slip stitches pulled out. Then it can be removed, washed, and slip stitched back up. Not as quick as a zipper would be, but now I don't have to worry about the zipper showing on the finished pillow. It starts with a double-chain crochet stitch. I have never done this stitch before, but the pattern gave text instructions for it. Well, I must have misunderstood the directions, because by the first row of shell stitches I had way too many shells and my scarf was realllly long. Oops. So I grudgingly frogged my work in progress. For my second attempt, I did a Google search for a double-chain crochet stitch. I discovered that I was definitely doing the stitch wrong, and learned the correct way. It is a nice starting stitch because (when done correctly) gives a stretchier starting chain.\n\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\nThe scarf, after the initial frustration, was easy. Learning the shell pattern was simple, and the picot stitch on the last row is a pretty finishing touch. I adjusted my starting chain to 180 stitches and went up a hook size to make the finished size longer and wider, so my scarf is bigger than the original pattern. If you've never used a double-chain crochet before, I would recommend looking up directions first though.
