When the new year started, I had made a resolution to try and use what yarn and fabric I had and buy less. I have an overpacked plastic storage container of both, which are crowded into a closet in my apartment. I really needed to stop buying for awhile to save money and so I don't run out of storage space. It's hard to cut out buying entirely, and for my fabric buying at least, it's about 50/50 right now using what I have versus buying new. I was itching to crochet something, but wasn't quite sure what. Wanting to stick to my resolution, I decided shop my yarn stash. That's when I found the Lion Brand Heartland yarn in Grand Canyon. It's hard to tell in a photo, but close up the yarn has different shaded strands and has a nice sheen. Instead of having something in particular I wanted to make, I took the yarn and searched for projects that I could make with it.

The main picture of the Royal Triangle Shawl I didn't think was too impressive, but I did like looking at the user projects. That's one of the best parts of Ravelry.com, don't you think? There are some really nice versions that are variegated colors and work up nice in this pattern. I decided to try out the pattern because a nice neutral shawl I figured would be easy to wear since it goes with most everything.

As I usually do, I read the project notes of other Ravelry users first. A lot commented on the impossible to achieve gauge, even when crocheting quite loosely. I didn't want the shawl too dense or warm, so I decided to start out with a bigger 8.0mm L hook to keep the shawl loose and drape well. Going up a hook size seemed to hit the recommended gauge spot on.

Other than changing the hook size, I didn't make any other alterations to the pattern. After doing a couple pattern repeats, I got the hang of it and was able to easily crochet in front of the tv.

I do like how it turned out. I wore it out this past weekend and even got a couple people complimenting it. I would recommend this yarn and the pattern and I think it's beginner friendly too. I would save this pattern because I think it be great in a bright color as a statement piece or in multiple colors.

A quick note about blocking it. The sides were curling a bit, so I steam blocked the piece. However, after a few wears it's curling right back up. A border might help prevent this, but I don't mind too much. It just gives it a definite right side and wrong side when wearing.

Materials Used

(Associate Links)

Happy Crocheting!

{"$t":"Nicole
$t":"http://www.blogger.com/profile/02225372040269847361
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"media$thumbnail":{"xmlns$media":"http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/
"thr$total":{"$t":"0
$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2348768008564562996.post-6199833176433930007
$t":"2015-02-24T12:00:00.000-08:00
$t":"2015-02-24T14:49:58.601-08:00
"$t":"10 for Tuesday: Crochet Shawl Patterns
html","$t":"

Springtime is coming soon, or if you live in California like me, it's already here. I just love this fabric. It feels very nice and drapes well. Two yards is enough to make two scarves, so you can make one for yourself and a friend. This scarf is perfect for an extra light layer in the springtime. I made them for Christmas, but in California the seasons can get a bit blurred.

This sewing project is super simple. It's ideal for beginners because it's very forgiving if your seams aren't prefect. I added a twist to the scarves before sewing to help with the drape, making this a Mobius Scarf. [It gets that name from the Möbius strip in mathematics]. It starts with a double-chain crochet stitch. I have never done this stitch before, but the pattern gave text instructions for it. Well, I must have misunderstood the directions, because by the first row of shell stitches I had way too many shells and my scarf was realllly long. Oops. So I grudgingly frogged my work in progress. For my second attempt, I did a Google search for a double-chain crochet stitch. I discovered that I was definitely doing the stitch wrong, and learned the correct way. It is a nice starting stitch because (when done correctly) gives a stretchier starting chain.

The scarf, after the initial frustration, was easy. Learning the shell pattern was simple, and the picot stitch on the last row is a pretty finishing touch. I adjusted my starting chain to 180 stitches and went up a hook size to make the finished size longer and wider, so my scarf is bigger than the original pattern. This also meant that it was no longer a one skein scarf, I used about a skein and a half.

Before blocking, my scarf was 74" by 5".

After blocking, the scarf was 80" x 6".

I would definitely recommend this pattern. Last week, I showed you my finished crochet peaked hat, and I was excited to keep making things to wear for fall. Or rather, when the weather finally cools down here. California didn't get the memo that it is now fall and the temperatures have been in the 90s all week.

For my next project, I wanted to make the CloudBurst Shawl. I loved the fringe and how it looked worn bandanna style. I've had my eye on the pattern for awhile. In fact, I attempted it last year, but got confused and frustrated so I frogged it and gave up. Most reviewers said it was a quick and easy project, but I definitely got confused in the first couple rows.

Time makes you forgot a lot of frustrations and failures, however, so I decided to try it again. The pattern is both written and charted, which definitely helped me figure it out this time (not without starting over a couple times before I got the hang the pattern). It may be just me, though. Luckily I figured it out this time.

For this project, I used Caron Simply Soft Yarn in Autumn Red.This is one of my favorite yarns to work with. It is 100% acrylic, but super soft and has a pretty sheen. I used less than 2 skeins to make it. This made me have to fudge the border a bit, and if you notice the fringe on the top two corners are closer together. If you do decided to make this pattern longer, I recommended doing an extra two 4-row pattern repeats instead of just one. That will keep the border the same pattern repeat as the original. This was my first time doing fringe, but It was so easy. I just wrapped the yarn around the width of a little notepad 3 times (4 for the corners), cut it, and looped and pulled it into the tassel holes. I debated whether of not to even bother with the fringe, but I think I like it better with it.

This was also my first time steam blocking acrylic yarn. I wish I'd taken a before picture to show the difference, but it definitely made a difference. The pattern sits more open weave and flat after blocking, and I was able to add a couple more inches to the wingspan. If you've never steam blocked acrylic yarn before, I would recommend watching this video as I found it very helpful.

I would definitely recommend this pattern. Total it took more 4-5 hours (I'm a slow crocheter), but it was easy enough to do in front of the TV once I got the hang of the pattern. I'd say it's advanced beginner if you're good at reading patterns and charts, or an intermediate pattern.

Let me know what you think!
