Recent Makes: Crochet Beanies with Pom Poms

Crochet beanie with pom pom | She's Got the Notion

I feel like I've been making a lot of hats lately. Half of them have been baby hats (a couple years ago it seemed like everyone around me was getting married, now everyone seems to be having kids!), but the other half all been for me. Including the free crochet pattern that I released last week for the Messy Bun Beanie. Check it out if you haven't already!

It's the tail end of winter here, and it being Northern California, our winters tend to be around 50 degrees with a good amount of rain (the last few years of drought excluded). However, I'm taking a trip to London later this month where it will be a bit colder and a bit wetter, so I definitely used that as an excuse to make myself a couple new hats. By the way, if you want to see pictures from my trip and my day-to-day life in general, be sure follow me on Instagram. I spend most of my time on social media there, so it's the best place to see what I'm up to and sneak peeks of future tutorials.

The first hat I made is the Snowfall Slouchy Hat by Whistle and Ivy. The original pattern is made for worsted weight yarn, however, I adjusted the pattern and make it with some bulky yarn I had.

I had seen a similar version of this hat in a knit pattern and fell in love with it. I loved the look of tiny hearts all over. I was *thisclose* to teaching myself how to knit just to make myself one when I stumbled upon the crochet version. Let me just say, to all the brilliant minds who keep inventing crochet stitches that mimic knit stitches, you all just keep enabling me to put off learning how to knit. I will teach myself...someday.

The hat was quick to make, especially with a bulky yarn. I used Lion's Pride Woolspun in black and charcoal, with a 'K' hook. To compensate for the thicker yarn and larger hook, I only did 38 rows for the brim, decreased the rows of the body of the hat to 60 stitches, and stopped at row 13 for the main body (row 14 and 15 were the decrease rows).

To finish off the hat, I made a pompom out of scraps of gray super bulky weight yarn.

I love how it turned out. I do wish the hat had a bit more slouch to it, but I think with time, washing, and wear it will become less stiff.

The other hat I made was the Cabled Slouchy Hay. This was my first time attempting the crochet cable stitch. It took a bit of time to get used to it, but it wasn't terribly difficult. It was mostly awkward since the stitches are done out of order and the double treble stitches are tricky to keep tight.

For this hat, I used Caron Simply Soft in black with an 'I' hook. It took me working on it in bits over the course of a week to finish. So it wasn't a quick project but didn't take too long either. The soft yarn definitely helps to give the hat a nice slouch to it. To finish it off, I added a faux fur pom pom that had been in my stash for awhile just waiting for the perfect hat.

I'm hoping these hats will help keep me a bit warmer while exploring England. Which hat is your favorite? Have you been making anything with pom poms?

Happy Crocheting!
