Chunky Stripe Crochet Hat: free crochet pattern

Chunky Stripe Hat: free crochet pattern | She's Got the Notion

I've been busying doing a lot of crocheting lately, and today I'm going to share with you my latest crochet project. The Chunky Stripe Hat is a easy beanie pattern that makes a great gift for guys. The two projects I've featured so far for my 6 Weeks of Gifting series have been made with women in mind. (Though there's nothing wrong with a guy using miniature potholders, imo). I thought it was time to feature a guy friendly project. And don't worry ladies, you can wear this hat too.

For this project, I purchased Lion Brand Lion's Pride Woolspun yarn in several neutral colors. I have never worked with bulky yarn before and I usually buy acrylic or cotton yarn, but I was drawn to this yarn. I love the look and feel of it. The yarn is 20% wool and 80% acrylic, so it rather soft and not itchy like a lot of wool yarn can be. It takes roughly 1 skein of yarn per hat. So if you're going to use two colors, you can make 2 striped hats with those two colors. The finished hat is fairly thick, so it will be nice and warm for the wintertime.

This hat is worked up in the round because I strongly dislike visible seams in crochet hats. Working in the round, unfortunately, makes the stripes meet up a bit off kilter. If that bugs you, I found a great tutorial for making seamless crochet stripes in the round from KT and the Squid.

For these hats, I purchased Woolspun yarn in Navy Heather, Oxford Grey, Charcoal, Black, and Fisherman (a cream color). The navy heather is my favorite, so I used 2 skeins of it. It is a nice navy color with bits of gray threads visible. I will give you the basic hat pattern first, then the break down of how I did the different stripe patterns. A word of warning, the darker colors crocheted up tighter than the lighter colors. So keep this in mind if making a hat for someone with a larger head.

  1. How much yarn does one hat take in yards and or ounces? Do you have a pom-pom pattern, or did you use the pom-pom maker?

    1. Hi Jeanette! Each hat takes a bit less than a skein of the Woolspun yarn, which is 127 yards. As for the pom-pom, I don't have a pom-pom maker. I used cardboard in the method outlined here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a03BTR3_3qg. I cut my cardboard circles so that the diameter between inner and outer circle measured about 5" total.

  2. Hi Nicole, thank you for the pattern! I am new to crocheting and reading patterns. I want to confirm I understand this one correctly. Am I supposed to slip stitch at the end of each round or just continue with the next hdc?

    1. Hi Cindy! The pattern is written in the round, so you do not slip stitch at the end of each row and just continue with the next hdc. When crocheting in the round, I like to leave a stitch marker on the first stitch of the row to help keep track of it. Hope that helps!

  3. Hey there, can i use worsted weight yarn for this pattern

    1. Unfortunately, that would make the hat much smaller since it's written for bulky weight yarn.
